Full Academic Year (FAY)
Overview
Full Academic Year (FAY) is whether a student was enrolled long enough to count toward a result. Accountability does not hold a school or district responsible for a student who just arrived, so FAY decides which students are included in proficiency and growth.
TKG Analytics tracks it at two levels:
- District FAY: the student was enrolled a full academic year in the district.
- School FAY: the student was enrolled a full academic year at the same school.
A student can meet one and not the other. For example, a student who transferred between two schools in the same district can be district FAY but not school FAY, so they count for the district but not for the school they landed in.
Where It Lives
- The FAY Assignments view lists active students in grades 3-12 who do not meet district or school FAY, so you can review who is being excluded.
- The Score Tracker includes district and school FAY filters so you can isolate FAY or non-FAY students.
How To Use It
- Open FAY Assignments to see the grade 3-12 students who are not full-year at the district or school level.
- Use the FAY filters on the trackers when you want to see exactly who is and is not counting.
What Data Feeds It
Every student starts the school year as full academic year, at both the district and the school level. That is the starting point, not a conclusion: it means no determination has been made yet, and TKG Analytics would rather include a student than quietly leave them out of a result.
Two things follow from that:
- FAY is not read from your SIS files. Your nightly sync and your manual uploads set your roster, your staff, and your schedules. They do not set FAY, and changing your SIS will not change a FAY flag.
fay_students.csvandfay_4x4_students.csvare rejected at upload, whether you send them through the file uploader or your nightly sync. - FAY resets when your district rolls into a new school year. A determination made about last year does not describe this one, so the new year starts clean rather than inheriting last spring's answer.
For the year underway, that means every student counts toward district and school results.
Common Questions
- Every student shows as FAY. Is that right? Yes, if your district has rolled into a new school year. The reset is deliberate: no determination has been made about the new year yet, so nobody is excluded.
- A student who was not FAY last year shows as FAY now. Last year's determination does not carry into the new year. Nothing has gone wrong.
- Why is a student district FAY but not school FAY? They were enrolled all year in the district but moved schools, so they count for the district and not for the receiving school.
- Can I change a student's FAY on their profile? No. The FAY checkboxes on a student's record are read-only.
- Our FAY Assignments list is empty. That is what a district looks like when every student is full academic year, which is the state a new school year starts in.
- We uploaded a FAY file and it was rejected. That is correct.
fay_students.csvandfay_4x4_students.csvare no longer accepted, through the file uploader or your nightly sync. Remove the file from what you send. If your nightly sync keeps sending it, see Scheduled Tasks.
